Steven "Murph" Edward Murphy, Jr., 36, of Penbrook, passed away unexpectedly at his home, on July 23rd, 2026. He was a beloved son, brother, grandson, cousin, boyfriend, friend and Fire Chief. He will be greatly missed.
Steven was born on June 20th, 1990 to Bonnie Harvey (Leaman) in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. He attended South Side Elementary school and Central Dauphin East Middle. Steven graduated from Dauphin County Technical School in 2009.
He enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing on the Susquehanna river and taking his dogs swimming. Steven enjoyed watching hockey, football, and baseball. His favorite teams were the Pittsburgh Penguins, Miami Dolphins, Boston RedSox and Baltimore Orioles. Orange was his favorite color. Steven dedicated his life to serving his community as a firefighter since the age of 14. He was a member of the Citizens Fire Company No. 1 of Penbrook (Co. 30) where he held many different roles over the years, including Vice President, President, Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, and lastly as Fire Chief beginning in 2021 and remaining in the role until his passing. Steven also spent time over the years serving with Friendship Fire Company of Bressler (Co. 41), Swatara Township Fire Company (Co. 49), and Steelton Volunteer Fire Department (Co. 50).
He is survived by his mother, Bonnie Harvey and stepfather Les Harvey; his sisters, Melody Harvey and husband Paul Robinson, Jen Hallman and husband Richard Hallman; his niece Taylor Hallma; his great-niece Tessa; his nephews, Tyler Underkoffler and Tanner Hallman; his girlfriend of 8 years Michaila Brady; and his 2 dogs, Captain and Lieutenant. Steven is preceded in death by maternal grandmother Miriam Leaman and grandfather Wayne Leaman.
Memorial Services with Firefighter Honors will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, July 31, 2026 at Wiedeman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 357 South Harrisburg Street, Oberlin, with Pastor Mark Halliday, officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm in the funeral home. Arrangements by Wiedeman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc.
