Joseph R. “Smokey” Potami, 99 of Lower Paxton Township and formerly of Steelton died Friday, April 27, 2012 in the home of his daughter.


He was a retired employee of the Bethlehem Steel Corp. Steelton, US Marine Corp veteran of WWII, having fought in the battle at Guadalcanal, member of the former St. Ann Roman Catholic Parish and the Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Parish, Steelton. He was a life member of the Steelton Italian Club, former Steelton Moose Lodge and the Baldwin Hose Co. #4.


Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Marian L. Sellers Potami and is survived by a son, Joseph D. Potami and wife Lisa D. of Loysville; 3 daughters, Kathleen M. Stynchula and husband Dr. Joseph F. of Lower Paxton Twp., Nina M. Kuhns of Hummelstown, and Carol A. Yanich and husband Michael T. of Harrisburg; 5 grandchildren, Christopher N. Romozi, Brooke J. Stynchula, Jason D. Potami, Thaddeus J. Romozi and Andrea D. Biezad; 1 great-granddaughter, Bella D. Biezad.


Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 11:00am in the Prince of Peace – Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church 815 South Second Street, Steelton with Rev. Msgr. James M. Lyons, pastor as celebrant. Burial will be in the Holy Cross  Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Thursday from 9:30am until 10:30 am in the Wiedeman Funeral Home 357 South Second Street, Steelton.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central PA 1320 Linglestown Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17110.
