Mary Elizabeth Chambers Miller ended her journey in this life on December 17, 2011 in Spring Creek Rehab & Health Care Center, surrounded by her loved ones, when she entered heaven to be with her Lord.
Better known as Mary Lou, she was born May 26, 1926 to her father, Joseph C. Chambers and her mother, Mabel Welsh Chambers. She grew up in Steelton, attending St. James Catholic School and Steelton High School. Mary Lou was a former choir member at St. James and after the closing of St. James, she became a member of St. Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church, Swatara Twp.
She served in the US Army Air Force as a PFC, assisting ophthalmologists in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Texas from 1943 through 1945. For years she served as a waitress and cook for Steelton VFW Post 710. She also served as a cook for Martz Tavern in Steelton. Mary Lou then established a career working for PennDOT, and retired after 22 years of service.
Mary Lou was Past President of the Steelton VFW Auxiliary, Life Member and Past Historian
of
American Legion Post 420, Steelton, and Women of the Moose Chapter 919. She served
as Assistant Secretary for the Dauphin Co. Democratic Party for 4 years and Chairman
of Steelton’s 4th Ward Democratic Party.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph D. Miller and numerous sisters and brothers. Surviving is her daughter, Paula J. Chambers; sisters, Theresa J. Ward of Steelton, Bernadette J. Ward of Harrisburg, and Frances M. Pugh of ShermansDale; and brother, Edward F. Chambers of Elizabethtown; granddaughter, Joann C. Chambers; grandson, Paul E. Chambers; great grandson, Dalton J. Chambers; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 10:30 am in St. Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church, 4000 Derry St., Swatara Twp. with her cousin, Very Rev. Daniel C. Mahoney, Pastor of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Latrobe, as celebrant. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 9:00 until 10:00 am in Wiedeman Funeral Home, 357 S. Second St., Steelton.
