Walter “Pop” Metrick, 83, of Harrisburg, died Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the home of his daughter in York, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was a retired Quality Assurance Specialist for the Mechanicsburg Naval Supply Depot, an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and a US Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Harrisburg, VFW Post 710 and American Legion Post 420, both of Steelton. Walter enjoyed spending time with his grandsons and was an avid Notre Dame and Yankees fan.
He was the son of the late John and Mary Kurcaba Metrick and was born in Shaft, PA, which is now Shenandoah, and he was the widower of Theresa E. Levandowski Metrick. He is survived by one daughter, Deborah J. Barlek and her husband, Joseph F. of York; one son, Walter M. Metrick and his wife, Patricia of Scottsdale, AZ; two brothers, John Metrick, Jr. of Reading and Joseph Metrick of Wilmington, DE; two grandsons, Joseph F. Barlek III and Brandon M. Barlek; and several nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 10:30 am in St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 1439 Market St., Harrisburg. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 9:00 am until 10:00 am in Wiedeman Funeral Home, 357 S. Second St., Steelton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the new Bishop McDevitt High School, 2200 Market St., Harrisburg, PA 17103.
