In Loving Memory....

Lawrence E. Baker, 82, of Harrisburg died unexpectedly Friday, February 3, 2012. He was born in Harrisburg, the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Baker.


Larry is a 1947 graduate of William Penn High School. He was a US Army Veteran who served in Japan as an ammunition records specialist and honorably discharged in 1953. Worked for General Foods Corporation, K&W Tire, and retired from Henise Tire Company of Cleona in 1993.  He worked part-time for Highspire Auto and Truck Repair.


He always had a strong desire to help others which contributed to his volunteer work at CONTACT Helpline in 1970, and continued for 40 years, where he served in all but one office.  He served on the Board of Directors in both the local CONTACT Center as well as CONTACT USA.  He was a Board Member of Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area.  He was an active member of the Penbrook United Church of Christ, serving as Chairman of numerous committees and President of the Consistory.


He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Swartz Baker; three children, Margaret Baker Chrencik and husband William P., Stewartstown, Mark L. Baker and wife Kathy Johnson Baker, Harrisburg and Mary K. Baker Walters, Ellicott City, MD; 6 grand children, Elizabeth Chrencik Djaraher and husband Richard, Lucas W. B. Chrencik and wife Christine Carey, Megan Baker Langlois, Travis E. Langlois, Ashley L. Walters, and Brandon M. Walters; one great-grandson, Carter W. Djaraher; one step great-granddaughter, Rachel Djaraher; one sister, Dorothy Rodriguez; two brothers, Martin and Joseph Baker.  He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.


In keeping with Larry’s generous spirit, he gifted his body to medical science through Humanity Gifts Registry.





His life will be celebrated with a memorial service on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. in the Penbrook United Church of Christ, 56 Banks Street, Harrisburg, PA 17103 with the Rev. Dr. Robert S. Stoudt, pastor officiating.  A gathering will follow immediately after service in the church fellowship hall.  Arrangements by Fackler – Wiedeman Funeral Home, Harrisburg.
