Harold D. "Gaff" Gaffney


Harold D. “Gaff” Gaffney, 63, of Susquehanna Twp., died Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at his group home.

Harold was born March 4, 1947 in Harrisburg , son of the late Val and Evelyn Taylor Gaffney.

He attended Marshall Elementary School , Harrisburg , worked at the Center for Industrial Training for 35 years, had been a member of the former Olivet Presbyterian Church from birth until 2001, and attended Camp Sertoma for many years as a youth.

Harold had difficulty learning, but could teach about unconditional love, without consideration of physical appearance, education, color of skin, or age. Harold was associated with football programs at the former John Harris High School , Harrisburg High and Bishop McDevitt High School since 1964, as their “Mascot Coach”. Football and all sports were highlights of his life. Due to Harold's health, he was unable to participate these last two years.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Gaffney Harvey and a niece, and is survived by one sister, Jeanette Lepard and husband, Richard of Lititz; two brothers, V. Robert Gaffney and wife, Sandra of Mechanicsburg and Gregory Gaffney and wife, Sandy of Hummelstown; ten nieces and nephews and 19 great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Impact System Staff at Elmerton Avenue for their dedication and care.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 11:00 am in Fackler-Wiedeman Funeral Home, 23 rd & Derry Sts., Harrisburg with Rev. Scott C. Harvey, his nephew, officiating. There will be a private burial immediately following the service in Rolling Green Cemetery . Viewings will be held on Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 pm and on Monday from 10:00 until 11:00 am in the funeral home.
